LONG BEACH NAVAL SHIPYARD

D. Ross Fleetwood served as project manager for two large projects at Long Beach Naval Shipyard. The Service Group Building consisted of a structural steel building on thickened concrete slabs over grade beams and pile caps, and driven concrete piles. The project included 130,000 s.f. of material and logistical handling facilities, with gantry cranes and large scale material handling systems. The facility was a major part of the Naval Shipyards support of ship repair and refurbishing. The other project was an Abrasive Blast and Paint Facility providing fast track refurbishment of ship parts, as large as anchors and propellers. Prevention of corrosion required very fast movement from the blasting rooms to the paint application. As a professional engineer he provided design-build expertise on certain components. He was head project manager for both projects from start to finish, dealing directly with the Navy ROIC and AROIC on all project matters.
